When one door closes, several open

After my agency lost even more business and had an inevitable 6th round of layoffs coming, I knew it was time for a change. In This Economy (http://www.in-this-economy.com), I wasn’t sure I would find much opportunity.

I was wrong; there is a lot going on out there and I was able to get another job quickly. My specific skill-sets where critical, but I also have a fabulous network and am always thinking ahead.

The takeaway for me after looking and finding a new job, is that in this global economic crisis, many companies are looking for an edge- a way to grow and evolve smartly so they emerge more nimble and competitive on the other side of this recession.

I can’t tell you how many social media positions are out there. and social media is in large part a huge asset to me as I start anew. I would encourage anyone looking for work to blow-up Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and any other networking service, to not only get connected with people and opportunities, but to learn how these networks, aggregators and service clients work.

A decade or so ago, the Internet was a generation gap. Today, social media is the new new tool that separates those attractive candidates from the dime-a-dozen. so get out there, open doors, use these tools and embrace them as the new communication paradigm. you’ll be glad you did.

Anthropology is a passion of mine, which is another way of saying I am a people watcher or a people studier. There is always more going on than you can see, but will never truly know. I don’t care who you are; you are guarding some facet of yourself and will forever. Studying people will always mean wondering and therefore be an endless and fertile playground for the imagination.

TV is attempting to kill the imagination, but I will always enjoy my daydreams, conspiracy theories and deviant thoughts much more than Anderson Cooper 360.

What we read, hear, witness or experience at any given moment in life is fodder for self-expression, insight and inspiration. So, while this may be yet “just another blog,” I intend to provide a new lens for life, and I promise you, it will not be re-packaged NPR stories or snarky, self-indulgent rants.

I will invent to entertain and provoke. As long as at least one of you reads and responds, I am inspired.

This is my first blog. ever. well, unless you count the hundreds of micro-blog posts I spew on Twitter, but this is a place I can explore colored words (grass, eggplant, Sapphire, lightning), sound words (crackle, squanch, plink, burble), and consequently, made-up words that seem so real without any limits.

There is syntax and subtext. I seek to elucidate meta-text and the negative space between letters.

So this is an open invitation to come enjoy this unique and dynamic context as home to current events in the arts, outer-space, financial markets, renewable energy, the environment, politics, marketing/advertising, extreme sports, foreign countries and food.

Won’t you join me?

Why did MJ have to die or Jimmy Hendrix or my good friend Mike Burnett, who all seemed “so young” and “in their prime?” Tragedy gives way to so much regret, introspect and often times, an intention to start “living!”

I looked at iTunes with @rondostar last Friday and Michal Jackson albums were the majority top sellers – overnight! Really? So you bought Off The Wall yesterday because it’s now even more relevant but did you jump to your toes and then try to do a 360 into the MoonWalk while “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” was rattling the windows? No? Did you get up and dance at all? Why not?

Wake up!

Art is priceless BEFORE the artist is dead. There is poignant and provocative beauty from the moment the paint drys, but you have to wake from your indifference, preconception and mass influence first. Each day is a gift to you – that’s why they call it the ‘present.’ I am not saying it’s faddish to by an MJ album just because he recently died; what I am saying is, breathe it in. Let that impulse become a fully-blown feeling. Seek out and embrace all the treasures of life of your volition, rather than waiting for life to reckon with you first.

Death is often described as both tragedy and celebration – appropriately, the final Yin-Yang before you become an eternal beam of light illuminating the hearts of all those who knew you. Life is simply awesome and we each face thousands of decisions every day. I challenge you to learn from the living, to entertain fleeting notions and curiosities. Live like you were just scared to death!

My father-in-law says, “when one door is closed, 72 more are opened.” I say there is no time BUT the present to explore those opportunities, and they are everywhere. You can’t choose your opportunities, but you’re the only one who can SEIZE THEM!
